Faecal Calprotectin

Calprotectin - is a Calcium binding protein, makes up 60% of cytosolic contents of neutrophil

                     - Robust protein, doesnt undergo proteolytic degradation in faeces

                     - remains stable at room temperature for 3-7 days

Meta-analysis of 7 studies, using F-Calpro to differentiate IBS from IBD showed, at levels of 50ug/g, 93-94% sensitivity and specificity of excluding IBD

As a screening test - higher values of Calpro increases likelihood of IBD

                                 FC 100 - 250 = Risk of IBD 12%

                                 FC >250       = Risk of IBD 46%

For surveillance purposes,

Consider checking FC every 3-6 months in patients on immunomodulators. FC > 200 may indicate need for review of treatment.
